About Edexcel IAL Biology past papers
This page holds 153 question papers and 153 mark schemes for IAL Biology, covering 26 exam sittings from 2014 to 2024. Every paper is free to open, with no account and no download limit, and each one sits beside its mark scheme so you can mark your own work the way an examiner would. The most recent sitting here is May 2024.
The units covered are U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U6 and P2. Papers appear under more than one specification code — WBI01, WBI03, WBI04, WBI05, WBI06, WBI02, WBI14, WBI11, WBI12, WBI16, WBI13 and WBI15 — because the qualification has been revised during this period. Older papers remain useful: most of the subject content carries over, and the extra practice is worth more than a tidy archive. Each paper is labelled with its own code so you can see which generation it belongs to.
Papers here come from the January, May, June and October series — about 2.4 sittings a year across the 11 years covered, which is why there is usually a recent paper available whichever session you are entered for. The fullest sitting is May 2021, with 7 units, which makes it a good place to start if you want a complete set to work through.
Revising Biology
IAL Biology rewards precision in language and the ability to read unfamiliar data, far more than breadth of recall.
Questions regularly present an experiment or organism you have never studied. The biology being tested is always something you have covered — the first task is identifying which topic it belongs to, before writing anything.
Mark schemes are specific about terminology. Approximate wording loses marks that the student genuinely earned on understanding, which is the most frustrating way to drop a grade.
Give statistics and data-analysis questions dedicated practice. They appear reliably, follow predictable patterns, and are often skipped in revision because they feel like maths rather than biology.
