About Edexcel IAL Physics past papers

This page holds 154 question papers and 202 mark schemes for IAL Physics, covering 36 exam sittings from 2009 to 2024. Every paper is free to open, with no account and no download limit, and each one sits beside its mark scheme so you can mark your own work the way an examiner would. The most recent sitting here is May 2024.

The units covered are U1, U2, U3, U4, U5, U6, U3B and U6B. Papers appear under more than one specification code — WPH01, WPH02, WPH03, WPH05, WPH06, WPH04, WPH11, WPH12, WPH13, WPH14, WPH15 and WPH16 — because the qualification has been revised during this period. Older papers remain useful: most of the subject content carries over, and the extra practice is worth more than a tidy archive. Each paper is labelled with its own code so you can see which generation it belongs to.

Papers here come from the January, May, June and October series — about 2.3 sittings a year across the 16 years covered, which is why there is usually a recent paper available whichever session you are entered for. The fullest sitting is May 2024, with 6 units, which makes it a good place to start if you want a complete set to work through.

Revising Physics

International A Level Physics is assessed unit by unit, and the units build on each other — which changes how you should revise.

Each unit is a separate exam with its own grade boundary, so a weak unit cannot be hidden behind a strong one. Work out which units you are sitting this session and concentrate there rather than revising the subject as a whole.

The long-answer questions want a chain of physics reasoning, not a conclusion. Each step that follows logically from the last earns a mark, so writing the full chain — even when the ending feels obvious — is worth several marks per question.

Practical and data-handling questions carry real weight: uncertainties, graph work and evaluating a method. These are the most predictable questions on the paper and the ones students prepare for last.

Worth knowingUnit codes run WPH11 to WPH16 — the digit before the slash is the unit number. WPH11 and WPH14 are entirely different exams.
